Production Scheduling Systemssss

    About Production Scheduling/Constraint Based Scheduling

Production scheduling software, also known as constraint based scheduling helps manufacturers generate realistic and executable production schedules. Some of these applications use genetic algorithms to programmatically arrange production schedules for the best possible outcome based on a number of constraints, which are pre-defined by the user. These rule-based programs cycle through thousands of possibilities, until the most optimal schedule is arrived at which best meets all criteria. Constraint-based scheduling needs accurate data in order to arrive at the best possible scheduling scenario.

    Scheduling R&D

Scheduling for R&D can be a bit different than scheduling for production departments. Research and development departments in some manufacturing environments can often be a simplified version of the manufacturing process but in some companies the R&D functions can be even more complex. In some R&D environments there are development procedures such as tooling development, advanced testing parameters or quality functions that make scheduling production runs and projects more complex.

Using Roles in a Scheduling System

One aspect of a scheduling system which is sometimes overlooked is that of specifying the roles needed for a specific job or process to be accomplished. In a number of industries cross-training of roles is expected of workers, whereby each individual can perform a number of tasks. But even then, specific qualifications for a job or process still need to be identified.

    Open Source Scheduling Software

What is Open Source Scheduling Software? "Open source" software is a term for software grants everyone access to the software’s programming code. With this type of software the source code is not hidden or encrypted. Though purchasing open source software might seem like an obvious choice over software that is not modifiable, some significant disadvantages of such applications often stop businesses from implementing it.

    New Methods of Scheduling Production

One of the most common, if not the most common, way to schedule any type of manufacturing production process is through utilization of multiple spreadsheets. Sometimes other methods include white boards, post it notes or other manual methods. While these processes may have been efficient enough twenty years ago there are new and more efficient ways of scheduling production.

Difference Between Using a Spreadsheet and Database

One of the major differences between using a spreadsheet for scheduling and using a database is that … well … one is a spreadsheet and one is a database. I can hear right away, some readers are asking, "So what?" What is the basic difference between a spreadsheet and a database anyway? Why is having something called a "relational database" so important when dealing with various kinds of data?
